Calling all kids! Children can join Birmingham city centre's big day of running - here's how
The Great Birmingham Run half marathon has shorter routes for children - and a medal for each waiting at the finish line.
t’s not only mums and dads who will get the chance to run the city streets at this year's Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run.
Children of all ages can also enjoy the excitement of an organised running event by taking on two shorter routes. The Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Junior and Mini Runs take place on the same day as the Great Birmingham Run half marathon, meaning the whole family can enjoy a weekend of sporting activity and celebrate in style with a finisher’s medal.
The Junior and Mini Runs head out from Jennens Road, taking in Moor Street Queensway before cutting through the grounds of Aston University on the way back to Jennens Road for that all-important finish line experience. The 1.5k Mini Run is open to children between the ages of 3-8, while the 2.5k Junior Run is open to 9-16 year-olds. All finishers receive a medal to show off at school or to friends.

Children at the 2018 Great Birmingham Run.
Dozens of children from Nishkam Primary School in Handsworth, Birmingham, and Nishkam Trust School in Wolverhampton will be wearing the red tee-shirts of city charity Zero Hunger with Langar at the Mini Run, to help the charity’s mission to improve quality of life around the world. ‘Langar’ is the concept of providing free compassionate food for all people, regardless of faith, gender, age or social status.
Zero Hunger with Langar is just one of dozens of charities that stand to benefit from thousands of pounds of fundraising at the Midlands’ biggest day of running.
“Our aim is to have children signed up to the Mini Run and demonstrating the power that the younger generation have in maintaining the momentum for change,” explained Aman Sidhu of Zero Hunger with Langar.
“In our society an active lifestyle not only improves our health but social wellbeing. By seeing children making the effort to run for this cause will effectively encourage them to become more proactive within their local and even global communities.”
Team spirit: Wet weather did not stop these children at the 2018 Great Birmingham Run.
Starting on iconic New Street, the new-look Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run route takes in popular Brum landmarks and suburbs like the Rotunda, Selfridges, Bournville, Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston Stadium and Digbeth before finishing on Jennens Road, with Aston University campus hosting post-run refreshments.
The half marathon also features the ENGIE Business Challenge, which pits work teams against each other for fastest-time trophies and bragging rights in the corporate world.
